If you’re looking for good holiday gifts for your family and friends, cheap DVDs are a great idea.  However, you don’t want to buy someone a cheap DVD that they already own, so you need to do a little pre-holiday planning before you start you’re shopping so there are no returns to deal with later.

First, make certain the cheap DVD you’re thinking about buying isn’t a duplicate.  One way to decide this is to look through your friends or family member’s DVD collection and see what they don’t have.  Another way is to ask him/her what DVDs he/she wants but doesn’t own yet, although this may somewhat ruin the surprise.

When it comes to buying DVDs, note that you may want to buy older films instead of one’s just released on DVD.  People tend to buy new DVDs right when they come out if they’re going to buy them.  However, some people never get around to picking up that timeless classic or guilty pleasure film on DVD.  These DVDs are often cheaper than brand new DVDs anyway, so you get both a good film for your friend and a great bargain for you.

Another thing to take into account is what kind of films your friend or family member likes.  You want to be sure you’ll get them a DVD they will actually want to see and enjoy.  If you know of their favourite films and know what films they own on DVD, this will be a pretty easy thing to do.  However, if you don’t, you may want to ask them about what kinds of films they want or like.  You could also ask their spouse or children.

Overall, buying cheap DVDs is a great holiday gift idea if you’re willing to do a bit of research.  Of course, you can always take a chance and throw all of this research out the window and buy your friend or family member a copy of one of your favourite films on DVD and see if they enjoy it.
